Types of Computer

In this article we have to describe about the different types of computers. Let’s start with describing the types of computers one by one. Computer is divided into two main types.

(1.)  On the basis of work culture: - On the basis of work process they are of three types.

(i)  Hybrid Computers: - These types of computers are having the characteristics of both type of computers (Analog & Digital). Such computers are termed as Hybrid Computers.

(ii) Digital Computers: - These types of computers are mostly used and easy to find in current time. Binary Code System is only used in the digital machines. There are only two numbers used in it (0 for NO & 1 for YES). They work on the system of two digital numbers (0, 1).

(iii) Analog Computers: - Analog computers are basically based on the analog signals. They are generally used to map the common measurement units. For example the measurement unit used in barometer. This is better explained with the help of the picture given below.

 

(2.) On the basis of size and storage capacity: - They are of four types.

(i)Mainframe Computers: - Mainframe computers are bigger and larger in size in the comparison with the Mini Computers. The data processing speed is also very high and fast. The size of a mainframe computer is equal to a big shelf and a small room. They are mostly used in banks in the form of servers and in big commercial companies. They need cold environment always so that their processor should be work properly.

(ii)  Micro Computers: - As the name indicates this type of computers are very small in size in comparison to the other type of computers. Micro processor is used in this type of computers. They are used for daily purpose, entertainment and in education field also. They are also of two types.

(1.)          Desktop (Personal Computers): - They are placed and used through a table.

(2.)          Handhold / Personal Digital Assistant (PDA): - They are portable and take from one place to other. Examples: Laptops, Tablets, Palm top.

(iii)  Super Computers: - They are too big and large in size from other type of computers. Their processor needs always a cold environment so that there should be no harm to their processors due to heat. The size of a normal Super Computer is equal to a very large and big room. Their processing speed is very fast. They are used in scientific works such as weather forecasting, missile launching, Space Ship Technology. Speed of Super Computers is measured in Floating Point Operation per Second (FLOPS).

India 1^st Super Computer is PARAM-8000 made by CDAC Pune.

World 1^st Super Computer is- CRAY-1, CRAY-2, I.T.A, CRAY K.I.S.

(iv) Mini Computers: - They are in the size of a refrigerator. Mostly bigger in size from micro computers and less size from super and mainframe computers. As they are bigger in size so the processing speed is also faster. They are mostly used in small commercial offices or companies. Example: ATM Machines.
